Release Date: 22 Oct. 2026

On September 28, 2026, about 5:45 p.m. local time, a passenger was fatally injured while disembarking from a New York City Transit (NYCT) train at Utica Avenue Station in Brooklyn, New York.[1] The accident involved a 10-railcar A-Line subway train operating north on track A4, one of four tracks at Utica Avenue Station. Shortly before the accident, the train arrived at the station, and the passenger involved in the accident disembarked from the ninth railcar in the consist, carrying a bag in one hand and using a cane with the other. The passenger was still on the platform near the train when it departed. During this movement, the train’s tenth railcar dragged the passenger in the direction of travel and into the track area at the end of the platform, resulting in fatal injuries. Emergency responders pronounced the passenger deceased at the scene. The train’s crew was not aware of the accident until informed over the radio at Jay Street–MetroTech Station, several stops later. The accident occurred on an underground platform; weather was not a factor. The platform was illuminated by overhead artificial lights.

All aspects of this accident remain under investigation while the National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause and ways to prevent similar accidents.

Parties to the investigation include:
