Shuttle Bus Crash into Airport Terminal Roadway Concrete Wall

What Happened

This information is preliminary and subject to change.
Release Date: 23 September 2026

On Monday, August 31, 2026, about 3:03 a.m. eastern daylight time, a 2022 ElDorado National Axess low-floor transit bus (bus) operated by Academy Express was traveling north through the Terminal B departures roadway at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. The bus was occupied by a driver and 12 passengers (7 United Airlines employees and 5 United Ground Express employees).

The roadway, which was elevated on the third level of the airport terminal, consisted of three lanes that curved to the left. The left lane was designated for through traffic, while the center and right lanes allowed for short-term stopping for passenger drop-off. The posted speed limit was 25 mph.

Near the end of the terminal, all three lanes gradually merged into one single lane. First, the right lane merged into the center lane. Then, the center lane merged into the left lane. The remaining single lane descended from the terminal level, bordered by concrete parapets. A concrete wall oriented perpendicular to the descending roadway met the right parapet.

When approaching the end of the terminal, the bus moved from the left lane toward the center lane and collided with the concrete wall.

As a result of the crash, the driver and 12 passengers sustained injuries of varying severity. Emergency medical services transported all occupants to local hospitals for treatment.

Parties to the NTSB investigation include:
