Passenger Vehicle Roadway Departure and Crash

On August 8, 2026, about 11:57 p.m. mountain daylight time, a 2003 Cadillac CTS (passenger vehicle) occupied by a 17-year-old driver and four 17-year-old passengers was traveling southeast on Lookout Lane in Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado, when it failed to negotiate a leftward curve in the road. The passenger vehicle departed the roadway, rolled over, descended down a steep embankment and over a cliff face, and crashed on the rocky surface below. As a result of the crash, all five occupants in the passenger vehicle were fatally injured.

Lookout Lane is a residential two-lane road with one lane in each direction and a posted speed limit of 20 mph. In the area of the crash, the roadway features multiple curves. At the area of the road departure, Lookout Lane is bordered to the south by a sloped, mountable concrete curb and a sidewalk, which separates a park from the roadway. Beyond the park is a downhill slope that leads to a cliff edge with multiple dropoffs. The crash occurred at nighttime, and the weather was clear and the roadway was dry.
