About 3:38 p.m. eastern daylight time on Friday, May 8, 2026, a 2008 IC Corporation CE-300 Type C school bus occupied by 28 kindergarten through fifth-grade students from Broad Street Elementary School and a 48-year-old driver was traveling north on Bennett Street in Gibbstown, New Jersey. The school bus, operated by Holcomb Bus Services for the Greenwich Township School District, stopped south of the intersection of Bennett Street and Ashton Drive to unload students. After exiting the bus, a 7-year-old male student and a 10-year-old female student walked north along the sidewalk to the corner of Bennett Street and Ashton Drive, where they stopped before proceeding across the street. As the two students began to cross Ashton Drive, the bus moved forward from its stopped position and made a right turn onto Ashton Drive. During the turn, the bus struck the 7-year-old male student, who sustained fatal injuries. The school bus driver, the student passengers, and the 10-year-old female student pedestrian were not injured.

This investigation was initiated to support the NTSB’s continued interest in school bus safety. The circumstances of this crash will be evaluated along with similar ongoing investigations with the intent of issuing safety recommendations to prevent similar events.
