Collision between CBP Coastal Interceptor Vessel and Recreational Sailing Vessel Freya Dinghy

What Happened

​On May 2, 2026, about 1935 local time (Atlantic Standard Time), a collision occurred between a 41-foot US Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (CBP AMO) Coastal Interceptor Vessel, with four persons on board, ​​and a dinghy in Haulover Cut, near Charlotte Amalie Harbor, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The dinghy, which was associated with the 36-foot recreational sailing vessel Freya, sank. The one person aboard the dinghy was recovered and pronounced dead at the hospital. The Coast Guard has declared this incident a Public/Non-Public casualty. The NTSB will lead the investigation and determine the probable cause.
