On June 28, 2026, at 1026 local time (Eastern Daylight Time), the US-flagged research vessel Atlantis ran aground in Great Harbor Channel, near Lighted Buoy 5, at the entrance to Woods Hole, Massachusetts. After approximately 12 minutes, the vessel freed itself under its own power and moored in Woods Hole. The estimated damage is $3.5 million. No pollution or injuries were reported. The Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
