Contact of Towing Vessel Bering Titan with Lock Wall and Gate

What Happened

​On March 25, 2026, about 1527 local time (Pacific daylight time), the U.S.-flagged towing vessel Bering Titan was transiting the Hiram M. Chittenden Lock (large), in Ballard, Washington, when it contacted the lock’s starboard side cement wall and gate. No pollution or injuries were reported. The tow sustained no damage. The US Army Corps of Engineers provided an initial damage estimate for the lock of $2-3 million. The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
