Grounding of Barge Brooklyn Bridge, Towed by Southern Dawn

What Happened

This information is preliminary and subject to change.

On November 11, 2025, the towing vessel Southern Dawn was en route from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the barge Brooklyn Bridge in tow, when, about 1040 local time (eastern standard time), the tow line parted. Several attempts were made to resecure the barge, but it grounded on a reef in the Bahamas near Nunjack Cay. The barge was removed from the reef on November 15, and, on November 19, the tug and barge returned to Jacksonville. No pollution or injuries were reported. Total damages to the barge are estimated to exceed $4 million. The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
