On October 3, 2025, at 1122 local time (central daylight time), US Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a DSC (Digital Selective Calling) distress alert over VHF radio from the Phuoc Thanh Mai III, a 167-gross-ton commercial vessel, which had been fishing in Breton Sound, Louisiana, when a fire broke out in the engine room. The Phuoc Thanh Mai (a sister ship) was about 1 nautical mile away at the time and diverted to assist. At 1203, the Phuoc Thanh Mai crew confirmed that all four crewmembers on board the Phuoc Thanh Mai III had evacuated safely. The fire continued to burn for approximately 48 hours until the vessel sank in about 9 feet of water. The vessel leaked approximately 600 gallons of diesel. The Phuoc Thanh Mai III was a total constructive loss. The Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
