Cargo Loss on Container Barge Pacific Trader, Towed by Polar Storm

​On September 20, 2025, about 2200 Alaska daylight time, the towing vessel Polar Storm was towing the container barge Pacific Trader in the vicinity of Cape Decision, Alaska, when the vessels encountered severe weather. The barge subsequently lost several containers and a semi-truck overboard. None of the containers or the truck were recovered. The total loss value was estimated at $2.1 million. There was minor damage to the barge railings, and no injuries or pollution were reported. The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
