This information is preliminary and subject to change.On September 9, 2025, at 0846 local time (pacific daylight time), the Portuguese-flagged containership Mississippi was moored at the International Transportation Service (ITS) terminal, berth 232, in the Port of Long Beach in Long Beach, California, when 91 containers fell overboard during cargo unloading operations. An additional 95 containers were also damaged but remained on board the vessel. An emissions capture barge, STAX 2, with four crewmembers on board was moored alongside the Mississippi and was damaged by the falling containers. Two minor injuries were reported on the STAX 2. No injuries were reported to the crew aboard the Mississippi or to the longshoreman working at the terminal. All containers were reported to hold general cargo and no pollution was reported. Property damage was estimated to exceed $500,000. The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
