Fire on Bulk Carrier Radcliffe R. Latimer

What Happened

​​On August 11, 2025, about 2315 local time (eastern daylight time), the 722-foot Canadian-flagged self-unloading bulk carrier Radcliffe R. Latimer experienced an engine room fire while transiting in US waters, near Whitefish Bay, Michigan. The vessel lost power and was eventually anchored in Canadian waters. There were no injuries, and no pollution was reported. Damage is estimated at $3.5 million. The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
