On June 8, 2025, about 1550 local time (eastern daylight time), the bulk cargo vessel Hon James L Oberstar was transiting upbound on the Saint Mary’s River when it ran aground in a bend near Sailor's Encampment Channel, buoy Q22. The vessel’s hull was breached, resulting in the vessel flooding and listing. There were no injuries, and no pollution was reported. Damages are expected to exceed $500,000. The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
