What Happened

On May 18, 2025, about 2015 local time (central daylight time), the towing vessel Janis R. Brewer was transiting upbound with 13 loaded barges (coal) on the Ohio River near Evansville, Indiana, when multiple tow wires broke. Ten barges were set adrift, and one of the barges struck the ADM Growmark facility, damaging a spud piling and a dock barge. Damages to the facility are estimated to exceed $500,000. The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
