What Happened

This information is preliminary and subject to change.

On May 9, 2025, about 0812 local time (Pacific daylight time), US Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a report that the 67-foot fishing vessel Captain Raleigh was taking on water at the entrance to Grays Harbor, Washington, with four persons on board. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River launched rescue assets from Station Grays Harbor. At 0833, the Captain Raleigh capsized. Three of the persons on board, all of whom had donned lifejackets, were recovered from the water by a Coast Guard rescue boat crew, but the captain was reported to still be inside the pilothouse. Throughout the day, Coast Guard assets from Air Station Astoria, as well as a US Navy dive team from Bangor, Washington, continued search and rescue efforts. The search for the vessel’s captain was suspended at 2040 that evening. The captain remains missing and is presumed deceased. There was an estimated 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel on board. Damages are estimated at $750,000.

The Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
