Collision Between Tugboat Rascal and Containership Sealand Balboa

What Happened

​On January 26, 2025, about 0426 local time (Pacific standard time), the tugboat Rascal and the Portugal-flagged containership Sealand Balboa collided in Port Hueneme, California, while the tugboat was assisting the containership with docking. The tugboat’s hull was breached during the collision, and the z-drive propulsion room flooded. Temporary repairs were made to the tugboat, and the propulsion room was pumped out. The vessel was towed into drydock for repairs on February 7. There were no injuries and no pollution was reported. Damages are estimated at $2.6 million.

The US Coast Guard has declared this incident a major marine casualty. The Coast Guard will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will investigate and determine the probable cause.
