On March 8, 2024, about 0330 local time, a fire broke out in the engine room aboard the 75-foot-long yacht Savage while the vessel was transiting about 2 miles off the coast of Cape Henry, near Virginia Beach, Virginia. After attempting to extinguish the fire, all three crewmembers donned immersion suits, entered the water, and were rescued by a nearby pilot boat. The burning vessel was towed to shore and intentionally grounded. A local fire department extinguished the fire from shore. There were no injuries, and no pollution was reported. The Savage, valued at $600,000, was a total loss.
We determined that the probable cause of the fire aboard the Savage was an undetermined ignition source within the engine room.
