On January 31, 2024, at 0845 local time, a private yacht, model Overseas PT46, docked at Anchorage Marina in Baltimore, Maryland, was discovered to be on fire by the owner, who was living aboard the vessel. Dock hands working at the marina had also noticed the fire, helped the owner off the yacht, and called 911. The Baltimore City Fire Department and other local agencies responded to the fire. When the first firefighting units arrived at 0855, the Overseas PT46 and an adjacent yacht, model Prestige 550, were on fire.
During firefighting operations, the Overseas PT46’s mooring lines failed due to the fire; as a result, the vessel drifted off the pier and was subsequently pushed to the opposite side of the fairway by firefighting water. The vessel then sank in about 15 feet of water, and the fire was extinguished when the vessel submerged. Containment booms were later deployed to contain minor fuel and debris pollution. Firefighters extinguished the fire aboard the Prestige 550. The Prestige 550 was towed to a nearby marina and moved to dry storage. On February 6, the Overseas PT46 was salvaged, towed to a nearby marina, hauled out of the water, and moved to dry storage.
Our initial investigation did not identify significant transportation safety issues. We determined that additional investigation and use of resources are not warranted at this time. We have produced an investigation close-out memorandum, which can be found in our docket.
