On August 8, 2023, wildfires that had broken out on the island of Maui, Hawaii, spread to the 65-foot-long submarine Atlantis IV, which was moored without passengers or crew on board at Lahaina Harbor. There were no injuries reported.
The US Coast Guard declared this incident a major marine casualty.
Our initial investigation did not identify significant transportation safety issues. We determined that additional investigation and use of resources are not warranted at this time. We have produced an investigation close-out memorandum, which can be found in our docket.
