Sinking of Towing Vessel Polaris

What Happened

​​​On May 24, 2023, about 1600 coordinated universal time, the 87-foot-long towing vessel Polaris was moored at the Foxtrot Pier in Apra Outer Harbor, Guam, when it partially sank after a typhoon made landfall in the area. All four persons on board safely evacuated the vessel. There were no injuries, and no pollution was reported.​


What We Found

​​​Our initial investigation did not identify significant transportation safety issues. We determined that additional investigation and use of resources are not warranted at this time. We have produced an investigation close-out memorandum, which can be found in our docket.
