On June 18, 2022, about 1600 eastern daylight time, the 71-foot-long yacht Too Elusive was transiting at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire, when the vessel caught fire. Three persons on board abandoned the vessel and were recovered by a Good Samaritan fishing vessel. The burning yacht drifted in the Piscataqua River and sank off the coast of Kittery, Maine. There were no injuries reported.
The accident was classified by the US Coast Guard as a major marine casualty.
Our initial investigation of this casualty did not identify significant transportation safety issues. The Office of Marine Safety has determined that additional investigation and use of resources is not warranted at this time. We have produced an investigation close-out memorandum.
