On August 29, 2021, about 1155 central daylight time, one deck barge and two unknown commercial fishing vessels drifted into the Leo Kerner Swing Bridge in Barataria, Louisiana, after Hurricane Ida made landfall as a category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. As a result, the bridge was taken out of service.
Our initial investigation of this accident did not identify significant transportation safety issues. We have determined that additional investigation and utilization of resources is not warranted at this time. We have produced an investigation close-out memorandum.
