On July 30, 2021, about 1730 local time, the 46 foot long passenger sailing vessel Mary E capsized on the Kennebec River near Bath, Maine. The vessel had been knocked down by a strong gust of wind and was unable to right itself. There were a reported 15 passengers and 3 crew on board, and all were rescued by local responders. There were two reported injuries.
The accident was classified by the US Coast Guard as a major marine casualty.
The NTSB’s initial investigation of this accident did not identify significant transportation safety issues. The Office of Marine Safety has determined that additional investigation and utilization of resources is not warranted at this time. The NTSB has produced an investigation close-out memorandum.
