Ford Motor Company "Boost America" Press Conference, New York Auto Show, New York, New York

Thank you, Jac. I am pleased to be here today to participate in this important announcement for the children of America. The most dangerous place that children go each and every day is on America's highways. Although many parents and caregivers put their children in infant seats, child safety seats, and booster seats and think the child is safe, all too often they are not. We need to make parents aware that while 9 out of 10 of them may think they have buckled their child and their child's safety seat in properly, in 8 out of 10 cases, they have not. Unfortunately, most parents do not know the seats are improperly installed until after their child is killed or injured in a crash.

That's why, fifteen months ago, the Safety Board asked automobile manufacturers and the states to establish permanent fitting stations where parents can take their child with their safety seat and have trained technicians see if they have buckled the safety seat and their child in properly.

I am pleased that today, Ford Motor Company, has answered our call to action by creating a program to help the States provide regular and accessible fitting stations for the families of America. Parents and caregivers, please take advantage of the inspections that will be offered as a result of this program. Your child's life may depend upon it.

The Ford Motor Company has been part of our heritage of mobility in highway transportation throughout American history. It is certainly fitting that this company is putting children first on our highways.

I congratulate Jac Nasser and the entire Ford Motor Company team for this most important Boost America effort that you are launching today. Your endeavors and Ford's program will save children's lives.
