Event : Youth Open House and Transportation Educational Day
NTSB Conference Center
10/22/2015 9:00 AM

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is partnering with DriveSmart Virginia to hold a Youth Open House and Transportation Educational Day on October 22, 2015, in Washington, D.C. The event is one of several similar initiatives being held by safety organizations across the country in support of National Teen Driver Safety Week.

More than 100 teens from Northern Virginia high schools will participate in the one-day event. They will learn about the safety mission of the NTSB and hear first-hand from investigators the lessons learned from accidents investigated by NTSB.

“The Youth Open House is an effort to teach teens about safer driving practices and then empower them to take that safety message to their peers,” said NTSB Vice Chairman T. Bella Dinh-Zarr. “Teen driver safety is one of the agency’s highest safety advocacy priorities.”

This event will feature speakers such as Vice Chairman Dinh-Zarr, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Administrator Mark Rosekind, Virginia Congressman Don Beyer, and Fletcher Cleaves, a high school athlete paralyzed in a crash involving a distracted driver.

DRIVE SMART Virginia will provide teens the opportunity to use a simulator, and law enforcement officials will be on hand to offer perspectives on teen driving safety.

“Motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of death for teenagers,” said Janet Brooking of DRIVE SMART Virginia. “This is a fantastic opportunity to educate youth about the danger they will face on the roads and to change the culture of driving safety, which begins with our youth.”

The event will be held in the NTSB Board Room and Conference Center, located at 429 L'Enfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, D.C. from 9:00 am-2:30 pm. Follow our updates throughout the day on Twitter, @ #NTSBYouth.

The event will be webcast live at

NTSB public events are also streamed live via webcast. Webcasts are archived for a period of three months from the time of the meeting. Webcast archives are generally available by the end of the event day for public meetings, and by the end of the next day for technical conferences.
