Event Summary

Staff Presentations : 2 Mid-Air Collisions
NTSB Boardroom
11/15/2016 9:30 AM

Aviation investigators will make presentations on the safety issues involved in two 2015 midair collisions in which a total of seven people died.

The first midair collision happened July 7, 2015, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, and the other on Aug. 16, 2015, in San Diego, California.  Two people were killed in the Moncks Corner collision and five people were killed in the San Diego midair collision.

The NTSB announced Nov. 1, 2016, that the findings, probable cause, and suggested safety improvements would be deliberated at a public meeting of the board Nov. 15, 2016.  Due to the recusal of Member Robert Sumwalt from participating in the deliberations for these accidents, and the unavailability of Member Earl Weener, there will not be a quorum available (at least three board members) for the scheduled board meeting on the midair collisions.

As an alternative course of action, before the presentations, Chairman Christopher Hart, Vice Chairman Bella Dinh-Zarr and Member Weener will vote on the reports, findings, safety recommendation and Safety Alert via an electronic voting process.

These presentations are an opportunity to share with those in the aviation community and other stakeholders how the NTSB arrived at its conclusions, and explain why it has issued both a safety recommendation and a Safety Alert, which will be released following the event.
