On Friday, November 21, 2025, at about 2:21 p.m. eastern standard time, a 2022 International school bus, owned and operated by Maine Regional School Unit #13, was transporting students in the northbound lane of Broadway (Route 1A) in the town of Rockland, Knox County, Maine. Route 1A is a two-lane undivided roadway with one northbound and one southbound lane and a speed limit of 30 mph (see figure). The northbound and southbound lanes were separated by painted solid double yellow lines. The crash occurred during daylight hours and the roadway was dry.
The bus had stopped at the intersection with Eliza Steele Drive to unload three student passengers. In front of where the bus stopped was a marked pedestrian crosswalk across Route 1A. A 12-year-old student was the last to exit the bus. Upon exiting, the student walked toward the front of the bus. As the student was at the front right corner of the bus, in the marked crosswalk, the bus began to move north, striking the student. The student fell to the roadway and was run over by the bus. As a result, the student sustained fatal injuries. The bus driver and 19 student passengers on the bus were uninjured.
Parties to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation are:

All aspects of the crash remain under investigation while the NTSB determines the probable cause, with the intent of issuing safety recommendations to prevent similar events.
