On June 29, 2013, about 1200 Pacific daylight time, N130LD, an Ayers Less Drag Special airplane, was substantially damaged following an uncontrolled descent and impact with terrain near the Oxnard Airport (OXR), Oxnard, California. The certified private pilot, who owned the airplane, and his sole passenger who was also a certified private pilot, sustained fatal injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the local personal flight, which was being operated in accordance with 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 and a flight plan was not filed. The accident occurred shortly after the airplane departed OXR to the west.

A Federal Aviation Administration aviation safety inspector reported to the National Transportation Safety Board investigator-in-charge, that the airplane impacted a plowed field about 1 mile southwest of the departure end of OXR Runway 25. The inspector stated that the right wing and fuselage were consumed by a postcrash fire. Additionally, the empennage, left horizontal stabilizer, partial sections of the vertical stabilizer and rudder, were observed to have sustained thermal damage.

It was reported by a local resident who was in the process of visiting a storage facility located toward the west end of the airport, that he heard the accident airplane’s engine backfire 2 or 3 times, followed about 10 to 15 seconds later by a “loud boom”.

The wreckage was recovered to a secured storage facility for further examination.
