On September 12, 2006, a Boeing 737-319 operated by Air New Zealand experienced electrical anomalies during and after the takeoff from Auckland, New Zealand. The crew elected to make an immediate return to the airport. After landing and coming to a halt on the taxiway, smoke was observed. This intensified quickly and an evacuation was ordered. The 5 crew and 96 passengers evacuated using the slides. There were no injuries.
Examination revealed a failure of the R1 Relay, which caused the 28v DC
Battery Bus to go off line.
The investigation by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission of New Zealand is continuing.
