NTSB investigators may not have traveled in support of this investigation and used data provided by various sources to prepare this aircraft accident report.THE PLT RPRTD THAT DRG FLT, THE ENG BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH. HE ELECTED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING IN AN OPEN FIELD. DURING THE LANDING, THE ACFT APCHD A DITCH, WHICH THE PLT DID NOT SEE FROM THE AIR. HE INITIATED ACTION TO 'FLOAT' THE ACFT OVER THE DITCH. HOWEVER, AFTER CROSSING THE DITCH, IT TOUCHED DOWN NOSE LOW, THEN NOSED OVER ON SOFT TERRAIN. AN EXAM OF THE ENG REVEALED THE #2 CYLINDER HAD LOW COMPRESSION & THE LEFT MAGNETO HAD INTERMITTENT OPN DUE TO EXCESSIVE WEAR OF THE BREAKER CAM.
