Oct. 1 2025 - Update
This event is postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
On October 7, Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy will host an in-person summit on advancing safety for those working on and around the nation’s rail system. Rail work consistently ranks among the most hazardous occupations, largely due to exposure to moving equipment and unforgiving operating environments. These factors contribute to rail safety issues frequently highlighted in NTSB safety investigations, including:
- collisions,
- derailments, and
- on-track accidents.
The NTSB is currently investigating thirteen incidents resulting in rail worker fatalities or life-altering injuries sustained while performing routine railroad operations.
The summit will bring together leaders from the rail industry, labor, academia, and government to discuss:
- current safety risks for rail workers in freight and transit
- risk mitigation strategies, such as
- implementation of safety technologies,
- innovative procedures and
- comprehensive training programs.
The summit will also include aviation experts who will discuss the benefits of safety management systems (SMS), which have proven effective in improving aviation safety and cultivating a robust safety culture. Attendees can learn how to achieve meaningful safety gains through adoption of SMS in their rail operations.
The event is open to the public and a recording will be made available after. The full agenda and a detailed list of participants will be released closer to the summit.
