Public Hearing - Air Show / Air Race Safety - Chairman's Opening and Closing Remarks
Deborah A. P. Hersman
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Public Hearing - Air Show / Air Race Safety, Washington, DC
1/10/2012

On behalf of my fellow Board members, I thank all those who have participated in this hearing today. All of us appreciate the time and effort you took to provide us with informative and thought-provoking presentations.

Our team has spent the last several weeks putting together this hearing - thank you to Dr. Dan Bower, Dana Schulze, Clint Crookshanks, and Aaron Sauer. Under Member Sumwalt's leadership, many important issues have been highlighted.

One thing is clear from today's discussion. There is much that is being done well in this part of the aviation community ... and it's a valuable part of the aviation community that does so much to showcase the skills and the artistry of flight as well as to serve as aviation's goodwill ambassador.

As Joyce Carol Oates wrote, flying "stirs our capacity for dreaming." So too, do air shows and air races. Our goal, as always, is to continue the adventure of flight while we ensure its safety.

We stand adjourned.
