Details
Synopsis: ON 6/10/95, THE PANAMANIAN PASSENGER SHIP ROYAL MAJESTY GROUNDED ON ROSE CROWN SHOAL ABOUT 10 MILES EAST OF NANTUCKET ISLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, & ABOUT 17 MILES FROM WHERE THE WATCH OFFICERS THOUGHT THE VESSEL WAS. THE VESSEL, WITH 1,509 PERSONS ON BOARD, WAS EN ROUTE FROM ST. GEORGE'S, BERMUDA, TO BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. THERE WERE NO DEATHS OR INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THIS ACCIDENT. DAMAGE TO THE VESSEL & LOST REVENUE, HOWEVER, WERE ESTIMATED AT ABOUT $7 MILLION.
Recommendation: THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE MAJESTY CRUISE LINE: REVIEW THE BRIDGE WATCHSTANDING PRACTICES ON ALL ITS VESSELS, & REVISE AS NECESSARY TO ENSURE THAT ALL WATCH OFFICERS ADHERE TO SOUND WATCHSTANDING PRACTICES & PROCEDURES, INCLUDING USING LANDMARKS, SOUNDINGS, & NAVIGATIONAL AIDS TO VERIFY A VESSEL'S POSITION, RELYING ON MORE THAN ONE SOURCE FOR POSITION INFO, & REPORTING TO THE MASTER ANY FAILURE TO SEE NAVIGATIONAL AIDS.

Response: M-97-1 THRU -4 WERE ISSUED TO MAJESTY CRUISE LINE ON 4/10/97. DURING THE TIME FRAME FROM 4/10/97 TO 3/17/99 THE RECIPIENT HAD GONE OUT OF BUSINESS AND HAD SOLD ALL THEIR VESSELS. SINCE THE RECIPIENT HAS NOT RESPONDED, M-97-2 HAS BEEN CLASSIFIED "CLOSED--NO LONGER APPLICABLE".
