Details
Synopsis: THE U.S. 35 HIGHWAY BRIDGE CONNECTING POINT PLEASANT, WEST VIR AND KANAUGA, OHIO, COLLAPSED AT APPROXIMATELY 5:00 P.M. E.S.T., DECEMBER 15, 1967. FORTY-SIX PERSONS DIED IN THE ACCIDENT AND NINE WERE INJURED. TWO OF THE 46 PERSONS ARE STILL MISSING. THERE WERE 37 VEHICLES ON THE BRIDGE AT THE TIME OF THE COLLAPSE. THIRTY-ONE OF THEM FELL WITH THE BRIDGE, AND OF THESE, 24 FELL INTO THE WATER AND WERE LATER RECOVERED. THE OTHER SEVEN VEHICLES FELL WITH THE BRIDGE ON THE OHIO SHORE. THERE WERE NO PEDESTRIANS ON THE BRIDGE AT THE TIME OF THE COLLAPSE.
Recommendation: THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION: MAKE AVAILABLE THE PRODUCT OF THE GUIDE AND THE LAW TO THE LATTER OWNERS ALSO, FOR THEIR USE IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF ALL BRIDGES IN THE COUNTRY.
