NTSB Internship Program

​​​​​​​Overview

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB​) is a dynamic independent agency, which offers a myriad of unpaid college level internships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as well as business and administrative functions to expose students to the Agency’s mission.

STEM: Internship opportunities are available for college students seeking experience in research and engineering, specialized technical support of the investigation of accidents in the various modes of transportation (aviation, highway, railroad, pipeline and hazardous materials, and marine safety investigations).

Business/Administration: Internship opportunities are available for majors in business, communications, human capital, political science/pre-law, psychology, information technology, occupational safety and security, information technology, program/project management.

Sponsored Internships

We partner with educational institutions and/or other programs, which provide students with a stipend and/or college credit for their hours of work, and NTSB affords students with meaningful assignments.

Service Period

May through the end of September (note: Internship duration may vary, e.g., 6, 8, 10 or 12 weeks)

Salary/Stipend

For internships that are sponsored by educational institutions/programs, such organizations will compensate students with a stipend and/or college credit.

  • ​The NTSB is not responsible for compensating the student nor the institution.
  • The terms of compensation are between the student and the educational institution/program.
  • Lodging arrangements and living expenses are the responsibility of the educational institution/program/student.
  • Note: The NTSB does pay for local public transportation subsidy between the student’s summer place of residence and the NTSB assigned office with an approved transit subsidy application.
  • The NTSB enters into a student volunteer agreement that requires signatures from the students and the educational institution/program.​​​​

Requirements:

  • ​The student is required to undergo background and ethics clearances. 
  • Students must sign a student volunteer agreement, a telework agreement and a non-disclosure statement. 
  • Interns must be in the office Tuesday through Thursday of each week. Telework may be available on Mondays and Fridays. 
  • Interns will work a full-time, standard work schedule of 40 hours a week, 8-hour days. Eligibility/Qualifications:​

Student Selection​​

The educational institution/program administers its call for student applications for their internship program. The NTSB collaborates with the organization on the selection and placement of the students. The NTSB makes every effort to assign students to offices that align with their majors to enhance their work experience and expose them to the NTSB’s mission. The NTSB does not accept applications directly from students.​
