NTSB Safety Topics regularly receive the attention of our advocacy efforts. We encourage you to learn more about the safety topics below and take action to address the safety concerns identified.
Connected-Vehicle Technology (V2X)
Connected-vehicle technology enables commercial and passenger vehicles to communicate with each other, with the infrastructure, and with other road vehicles, such as motorcycles. It is also described as vehicle to everything (V2X), an umbrella term covering the various elements with which vehicles can communicate.

Automated Vehicles
Since the first fatal crash in the United States in 2016 that involved a vehicle operating in automation mode at the time of the collision, the NTSB has investigated numerous crashes of vehicles equipped with various automation capabilities.

School Bus Safety
Every day across the country, nearly 500,000 buses carry more than 25 million students to and from school and activities.

Motorcoach Fleet Safety
Motorcoaches are integral to our economy. While the number of motorcoaches involved in fatal crashes is trending downward, we must continue to work together to ensure the safe transportation of passengers on our roadways.

Truck Safety
Commercial trucking is integral to our economy and our American way of life. However, large trucks introduce a disproportionate hazard to passenger vehicle occupants involved in a crash due to their sheer size, weight, and physical properties.

Motorcyclist Safety
Motorcycles made up 3% of all registered vehicles in the United States in 2016 and accounted for only 0.6% of all vehicle miles traveled. Per registered vehicles, the fatality rate for motorcyclists in 2016 was six times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants. In 2016, motorcyclist fatalities increased more than 5% over 2015.
