Executive Summary:  A total of 1,727 general aviation accidents occurred during calendar year 2001, involving 1,749 aircraft. The total number of general aviation accidents in 2001 was lower than in 2000, with a 6% decrease of 110 accidents. Of the total number of accidents, 325 were fatal, resulting in a total of 562 fatalities. The number of fatal general aviation accidents in 2001 decreased 6% from calendar year 2000, and the total number of fatalities that resulted also decreased by 6%. The circumstances of these accidents and details related to the aircraft, pilots, and locations are presented throughout this review.
