NTSB ACTING CHAIRMAN URGES EXTRA CARE ON HALLOWEEN
With Halloween approaching, National Transportation Safety Board Acting Chairman Mark Rosenker is urging everyone to keep safety in the forefront. "With children trick-or- treating on the streets after dark, we need to exercise extra care to avoid turning what should be a fun-filled evening into a nightmare tragedy."
Halloween consistently is now one of the top days when pedestrian fatalities and injuries occur. It also is a time when the number of alcohol-related road accidents show a significant increase.
Motorists need to be alert, to slow down (particularly in residential areas), and drive carefully. It is also important for motorists and passengers to buckle-up. Seat belts are the best defense against drunk drivers.
For adults who may need a safe way home, the "SoberRide" programs in Austin, TX, Boston, MA, Denver, CO, Los Angeles, CA, and Washington, DC, will provide a free taxi ride. Similar programs are often available in other areas.
