NTSB TO CONSIDER TWO RAILROAD AND ONE AVIATION ACCIDENT FOR AUGUST 5TH BOARD MEETING


The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public Board Meeting on August 5, 2003 at 9:30 am., in its Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L'Enfant Plaza, S. W. Washington, D.C. There are three items on the agenda:

1. On April 18, 2002, a northbound National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) train P052-18, the Auto Train, derailed 21 of 40 cars on CSX Transportation (CSXT) track near Crescent City, Florida. The train was carrying 413 passengers and 33 Amtrak employees. The derailment resulted in 4 fatalities, 36 serious injuries, and 106 minor injuries. The equipment and track costs associated with the accident totaled about $8.3 million.

2. On February 1, 2001, two cars of the Angels Flight funicular railway collided in downtown Los Angeles, California. One passenger was killed and seven were injured. The collision resulted in $370,000 damage to the cars and an additional $1.2 million to replace the funicular haul system.

3. On February 16, 2000, an Emery Worldwide Airlines DC-8, on a scheduled cargo flight to Dayton, OH, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sacramento Mather Airport. The three crewmembers aboard the flight were killed; impact forces and postcrash fire destroyed the aircraft.
