EFFECTIVENESS OF AIRLINER EVACUATION PROCEDURES, HARD CORE DRINKERS STUDY ON AGENDA OF JUNE 27 BOARD MEETING

The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public Board meeting on June 27, 2000 at 9:30 am. The meeting will be held in its new Board Room/Conference Center located at 429 L'Enfant Plaza Centre, S.W., Washington, DC. Two items are on the agenda:

• The Board will examine a report and recommendations regarding the safety of aircraft cabin evacuation. Safety issues to be discussed include the effectiveness of evacuation equipment, the adequacy of air carrier guidance and procedures for evacuations and communication issues related to evacuations. • Annually, thousands of deaths result from alcohol-related highway crashes. The NTSB has identified a group of drivers termed "hard core drinkers" who account for a significant number of these fatalities. Staff is proposing, in a special investigation, a model program that States can utilize to combat this problem. Media contact for the Hard Core Drinkers study: Terry Williams

Directions to the new NTSB Boardroom/Conference Center:

The street entrance is located on Lower 10th Street just below the L'Enfant Plaza Promenade running between D Street and Frontage Road, S. W. It is right next to the public garage entrance. From the L'Enfant Plaza Metro: Take the 9th & D exit, walk through shopping plaza towards CVS and take escalator down to lower level. The Board room will be to the left.
