Honorable Deborah Hersman, NTSB Board Member

Deborah A.P. Hersman
Closing Statement - Investigative Hearing
Investigation of Railroad Accident
Collision of Two Union Pacific Trains
Goodwell, Oklahoma, June 24, 2012

We have no other witnesses to testify, so this portion of the NTSB's investigation into the railroad accident near Goodwell, Oklahoma, is concluded. The record will remain open for additional materials requested during the hearing.

On behalf of my fellow Board members and the NTSB staff, we extend our appreciation to the participants at this hearing. I thank each of the witnesses for their testimony, and the parties, and the party spokespersons, for their cooperation, not only at this hearing but throughout the investigation to date. We plan to hold a Board meeting to consider the final report on this collision this summer.

I'd like to acknowledge the NTSB staff from our Railroad division and the support of staff from our other divisions. Today, we have shined a valuable light on the facts and circumstances of last June 24.

All of the materials from the hearing will be included in the accident docket. Any party may submit proposed findings to be drawn from the testimony and exhibits, a proposed probable cause, and proposed safety recommendations designed to prevent future accidents. This is beneficial to the Board in its analysis and offers the parties the opportunity to state their views for the record.

This hearing is now adjourned.
