This two-dimensional animated reconstruction shows the accident sequence for a highway-railroad grade crossing collision on US highway 95 in Miriam, Nevada which occurred on June 24, 2011 at 11:19 am local time.
This animation illustrates the overall accident sequence starting from 40 seconds before impact. The speed of the train was determined from the locomotive event recorder data. The speed of the accident truck was calculated during a 5-second period when the truck was visible on the forward-facing video recorded by the locomotive. The video was analyzed to determine the position of both the locomotive and the truck as a function of time, which allowed the speed of the vehicles to be calculated. The speed of the truck was assumed constant until the point of brake application, which was estimated from the tire marks leading to the point of collision. The animation does not depict the weather or visibility conditions at the time of the accident. The animation does not include audio.
The left hand side of the screen depicts the overall accident area with a blue arrow representing the Amtrak Train #5 and a white arrow representing the accident truck. The North direction along with the time to collision in seconds, and vehicle speeds are represented as text in the upper left hand corner of the screen. To the right of the speed is a 1000 foot scale. There is an inset depicting the grade crossing signal system with lights that flash for the last 30 seconds of the animation. There is also an inset with a close up view of the advance warning sign and the grade crossing pavement marking that transitions into an inset showing the beginning of the tire marks with a 100 foot scale. On the right hand side of the screen is a close up view of the accident truck as it travels north on highway 95. On the upper left portion of the screen is a 150 foot scale.
