On Thursday, February 24, 2011, Member Weener visited the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Glenn Research Center, in Cleveland, Ohio. On this trip he was joined by Dan Bower, Senior Aviation Accident Investigator (Major Investigations)(AS-10), and Timothy Burtch, Aerospace Engineer (Vehicle Performance Division)(RE-60). During the visit the group received briefings from Ron Colantonio, Chief of the Icing Branch, and his staff, on the icing research undertaken at the Center, including both aircraft engine and airframe icing, along with atmospheric hazard sensing and hazard mitigation. The visit also included a tour of the Center’s Icing Research Tunnel and other research facilities, along with inspecting various NASA aircraft used in icing research activities. Additionally, the group had the opportunity to “fly” a simulator constructed by the Center to provide flight training for icing conditions. The Center clearly plays a critical role in advancing safety in aviation operations.
