Member Weener and Staff Ride the Acela Express to Amtrak’s Consolidated National Operations Center
On December 3, 2010, NTSB Board Member Earl Weener accompanied by his staff rode to Wilmington, Delaware in the Acela Express head-end car to the Consolidated National Operations Center, the facility from which Amtrak’s national operations are controlled. Member Weener visited Amtrak’s High-Speed Rail Training Facility where engineers, conductors and on-board staff are trained for Acela Express service. Upon entering the facility, the group was impressed to see arched over the door, “Safety is our highest priority!” The group learned about the signaling system for the Northeast Corridor and its integration with Amtrak’s positive train control system, Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACES). “These systems clearly demonstrated that Amtrak requires multiple, redundant systems to enable delivery, day in and day out, of safe rail services,” said Member Weener. After riding in the head-end car of the Acela Express, Member Weener had an opportunity to operate the Acela Express engine via the simulator. The trip concluded with a ride in the head-end car of a more traditional locomotive engine, NE Regional, allowing an opportunity to compare the high speed operation to a more traditional train.
