Chairman Hersman Joins Norfolk Southern at Annual Safety Expo & Awards Meetings

April 1, 2011

Chairman Debbie Hersman delivered the keynote address at Norfolk Southern’s Annual Safety Expo and Awards meeting in Norfolk, VA on March 9, 2011.  Addressing employees from throughout the company, Hersman stressed how building a company-wide safety culture begins with the individual – on the frontline and in the boardroom. Using recent accidents as examples, Hersman also cited the dangers of distractions.  “You don’t have to be a Hammond award winner or Railroader of the Year to improve safety,” said Hersman.  “It is the simple things that each of you do or don’t do each and every day – like relining a switch at the end of a long day or not taking a personal cell phone while you are on duty.”
