Chairman Hersman Discusses Highway Safety with Florida Transportation Leaders

March 4, 2011

On February 8-9, 2011, Chairman Hersman met with Florida House and Senate leaders and other safety advocates to discuss the NTSB’s highway safety priorities.  During the meeting held in Tallahassee, Florida, Hersman discussed transportation safety initiatives designed to reduce fatalities and injuries among teen drivers and motorcyclists, as well as using age appropriate child restraints in automobiles.

Hersman also submitted written testimony to the Florida Transportation Committee in support of Florida Senate Bill 238, which would require children ages 4 to 7 to ride in booster seats.  Florida is one of only three states that does not require children in automobiles to ride in booster seats up to age 8.  “We want parents and caregivers to use size appropriate child safety seats every time their children travel,” said Hersman, “Booster seats are simple, affordable and they can reduce fatal injuries by 54%.”

The Chairman also visited the ICAO in Montreal , speaks at the ABA Forum and addresses the Passenger Vessel Association in Februay.
