Renovation Project Causes Route Changes at NTSB's Headquarters

June 23, 2011

While L’Enfant Plaza, home to National Transportation Safety Board headquarters, is currently undergoing a major renovation project, it is business as usual for the agency and the 318 employees whose duty station is at the southwest DC location.

The biggest change for visitors to NTSB’s headquarters is the temporary detours to the offices from the plaza (ground) level as well as to the agency’s Conference Center and Board Room. Now, since the doors under the awning with the 490 address are blocked, access from outside on this level is through the doors of the lobby of the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel.  From inside the hotel lobby, a set of doors on the right leads to elevators, which allow access to the NTSB’s reception area on the 6th floor.

The NTSB’s Board Room front door is located on lower 10th Street, directly below L'Enfant Plaza.  During agency events in the Board Room, NTSB staff, wearing NTSB logo items, will also be stationed on the promenade level throughout L'Enfant Plaza to provide directions for the alternate access.  Visitors to the Board Room should note the following directions: From the Metro, follow the signs to the “L'Enfant Plaza” exit (9th and D Streets), after reaching the top of the escalator, walk into the food court/shopping mall, under the glass pyramid, towards the CVS store (on the left).  Due to the renovation project, the escalator adjacent to CVS that provides access to the Board Room level is out of service. Signs posted near the escalator will direct attendees to stairs leading to the Board Room. The Board Room can also be accessed on the garage level.

The L’Enfant Plaza renovation projecting affecting the entrance to NTSB Board room is scheduled to be complete by late fall 2011.  The 490 entrance to the NTSB’s headquarter offices is scheduled to be complete in January of 2012.
