Safe Kids Worldwide Briefs Chairman on its Never Leaving Your Child Alone Initiative

May 6, 2011

Last month, NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman was briefed by staff from Safe Kids Worldwide on its newest initiative, “Never Leave Your Child Alone.” Safe Kids stressed that leaving a child in a vehicle for a “quick” errand – even for a minute – could be a deadly mistake.  The number of deaths of children who were left unattended in a vehicle is trending upwards; last year, 49 children, ages two months to six year, died from heat stroke while being left unattended in vehicles – the worst year on record!

Safe Kids’ is working hard to get the word out to parents and caregivers. Temperatures in vehicles rise faster than we think, and a child’s body doesn’t moderate its temperature like an adult.  A child left alone in a car on a mild day can become overheated quickly and suffer serious heat related injuries or death.  Their important message is simple – don’t leave your child alone in a car – not even for a minute.

The NTSB has also partnered with Safe Kids Worldwide to educate parents and caregivers on the importance of properly restraining children in motor vehicles.  Since 1997, through the Safe Kids Buckle Up campaign, more than 20 million people have been reached through events and community outreach efforts.

As we approach the summer months and as the temperatures continue to rise, Safe Kids Worldwide will hold events and educate parents and caregivers on ways they can keep their children safe.
