Amphibious Duck Collides with Towing Barge, NTSB Launches Team 

 

On Wednesday, July 7, 2010, the Board launched a team to investigate a collision involving an amphibious vessel (DUKW 34) and a barge pushed by a tugboat (Caribbean Sea)The two vessels collided in the Delaware River, near Philadelphia.  On board the DUKW 34 were 35 passengers and two crewmembers, and on board the Caribbean Sea were five crewmembers.  Two passengers on the DUKW 34 died in the accident.

 

Tom Roth-Roffy was designated, the Investigator-in-Charge, and Member Robert Sumwalt accompanied the team and served as principal spokesman for the on-scene investigation – Member Mark Rosekind accompanied the team as part of his Board Member training.  Keith Holloway served as the on-scene press officer.

 

The team was on-scene for nine days.  Since the initial launch, the Board has released its preliminary report as an update on the status of the investigation.

 

The Safety Board investigated the sinking of the amphibious passenger vessel Miss Majestic, in Hot Springs, Arkansas on May 1, 1999 that claimed 13 lives including 3 children. Read about the investigation findings here.
