Notes:
Use of Data and Knowledge Has Improved Pipeline Safety
Data use is vital to Colonial’s strategy for achieving excellence in our operations. This excellence in operations is imperative. We will protect public safety and the environment.
Colonial Pipeline is an acknowledged leader in using, interpreting, and applying to pipeline inspection and repair, line inspection tools. These tools -- “smart pigs” to those of us in the industry -- have dramatically improved our ability to detect cracks, corrosion, and other defects.
From these inspection tools, we now have high-resolution images like this, that show us “anomalies” -- indications that something requires evaluation. These graphic enhancements to the detailed computer printout of the line inspection help us pinpoint potential problems in the pipe. Our engineers and technicians can then use this data and analysis of this data to maintain the integrity of the system.
Advances in technology have dramatically improved the speed for data analysis from the inspections. What used to take six months now takes two. By 2005, Colonial will have “real-time” data and analysis from our inspection tool runs and can take immediate actions, as necessary. System integrity enhanced, public safety and environmental protection maintained.
But that’s not all we’re doing. We take very seriously the operational reliability enhancements that will be associated with automation of our pipeline system. Colonial is currently implementing a pilot automation project on one portion of our system that will lead to a full system implementation by 2005. The result? Reduction in human errors, enhanced operational excellence, total focus on safe operations.
